"He called a little child to Him, and placed the child among them. And He said: 'Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.'"

This passage (Matthew 18:2-3 NIV) describes a moment in the Bible where Jesus calls a child to Himself in order to reveal an important truth about the kingdom of God, in answer to a question posed by His disciples: Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? (v.1)

Jesus answers this questions by pointing out the "lowly position of this child" (v.4) as the very trait that makes one great in His eyes. By doing so, He also highlights the importance of children in the kingdom, and the truth that we can learn a lot from them if we pay attention and not cast them aside.

The Bible - in both the Old and New Testaments - has an abundance of teaching on the value of children and the importance of instructing them the ways of God. Here are some of them:

Psalm 127 verses 3 to 5 (NIV): "Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."

This passage shows us that kids are a blessing from God given to parents. As with other blessings bestowed upon us by the Lord, we need to be thankful for our children and take good care of them. We are to treat them as precious rewards in the same way we would cherish our achievements and successes in life, which are also rewards from God.

Proverbs 22:6 (NKJV), probably the most quoted verse on children, tells us to "train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Leaders who head ministries for children often use this verse as a guide to keep them focused on their goal of training up kids in the ways of the Lord. However, leading a child to God is not the sole (or main) responsibility of ministers as shown in the following verse.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NKJV) is an instruction to Israelite fathers given by God through Moses: "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."

Here, the Lord gives men - fathers - the responsibility of raising up godly offspring; they were to impart and impress the ways of God to their biological sons and daughters. One of the reasons for this early spiritual training is to curtail foolishness, which is "bound up in the heart of a child" (Proverbs 6:15 NKJV). Another is to instill a love for God in the heart of a child at a young age.

We definitely want our children to grown up with a passion for God and His kingdom, and to take out the foolishness from their hearts.

On May 25 and 26, 2017, the Maranatha Children's Ministry will be providing a venue for kids to be filled with and experience the glory of God for themselves in this year's CAMP DAVID. The theme of the camp is "REVIVE US LORD", a desire for God to awaken the spirit of our children to the realities of the Spirit of the Lord.

This two-day kids' camp (Thursday and Friday) will feature sessions of worship, preaching and activities designed to stir up a hunger in the hearts of our children for supernatural things: prayer, healings, signs, wonders and miracles - all in the overwhelming atmosphere of the Father's love.

We are encouraging all parents and adults to register their kids and bring them to the Maranatha Christian Fellowship Sanctuary for Camp David. This is worthwhile investment on the lives of the children God has blessed us with as we point them in the right spiritual direction while they are young. And when they grow old, they will not depart from way of God.

Camp David is on Thursday, May 25 and Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Maranatha World Outreach Center. Registration is ongoing after Maranatha church services (registration fee is Php 350). For more information, get in touch with Roxanne (0943-550-6315) or Melanie (0925-588-7686).
